The Television Drama Series
Who Pays The Ferryman? was an 8 part TV drama series,
filmed around Elounda, Crete and produced by the BBC in 1977.
It was written by Michael J Bird, whose previous work had included
The Lotus Eaters series, filmed only five miles away in Aghios
Nikolaos.
In the series a former soldier returns to Crete, after a thirty
year absence, the island where he had fought alongside local resistance
fighters, or andartes, in WW2.
The cast was led by Jack Hedley as ex-soldier Alan Haldane and
supporting members included Betty Arvaniti, Marina Sirtis, Sally
Knyvette, Gareth Thomas, Patience Collier, Jack Watson, Lalla
Ward, Stefan Gryff, Patrick Magee and Neil McCarthy. The music
from the series became very popular in the UK with its traditional
Greek sounds.
