The richly decorated church of Panagia Kera has three aisles and decorated cupola (or dome) and can be found close to the village of Kritsa (just off the road that rises up into the hills from Agios Nikolaos) in the Lassithi prefecture of Crete. Building originally commenced in the thirteenth century to create a single aisleless church. Repairs and expansion took place in the following century and it was fully completed by the fifteenth giving the church the architecture that persists to the present.
Today's visitor is primarily interested in the Byzantine art with cretain frescoes dating back 700 years. Some of these were only uncovered in the latter part of the twentieth century. Biblical scenes depicted include the Annunciation, last supper and the Garden of Eden.
The additional church aisles are on the North (Agios / St Antonius) and South (Agia / St Anne) side of the original building, the aisle of which is dedicated to the virgin Mary.
