The ancient city of Olous now lies sunken in the waters off the modern Cretan fishing village and holiday resort of Elounda (which derives its current name from its Dorian predecessor - Olous / Oloundi / Elounda!) and as a seaport and trading city it had a rich and, at times, turbulent history with various allegiances and treaties. One of these involved a long standing feud and ultimate treaty with the nearby hilltop city of Lato around the second century BC as evidenced by an inscription found in the ruins of Olous.
According to Pausanias Olous possessed a wooden idol at the shrine of Vritomartis (Britomartis / Dictynna / Lady of the Nets) which was created by Daedalus, renowned inventor and father of the doomed Icarus.
